It was the beginning of the end for the Nephites. By the time one delves into the book of Helaman, the Nephites are for the most part starting to “ripening in iniquity” and there is much contention and strife in the land. Pride is entering the hearts of the people of the church also, and it seems that the Nephites are on a one-way path towards eventual chaos. But in spite of the wickedness and fighting, the people are very prosperous and have spread throughout the land. A pearl of hope is found in Helaman 3 which shows that there is always opposition in all things, and there are abundant successes in prosperity growth of the church which seemed to offset the bad that was happening.
Helaman 3:24 And it came to pass that in this same year there was exceedingly great prosperity in the church, insomuch that there were thousands who did join themselves unto the church and were baptized unto repentance.
25 And so great was the prosperity of the church, and so many the blessings which were poured out upon the people, that even the high priests and the teachers were themselves astonished beyond measure.
LESSON LEARNED: There is always opposition in all things. Even in times when the world may seem to becoming ever more wicked, the laws of opposition state that equally great things must be happening elsewhere.
