Listeth to Obey

The word listeth means "willeth," or wills. The word has not necessary changed meaning from the old English used in the 1600s to the present, but it is now considered archaic and no longer in common usage. The term is alive and well, however, in both The New Testament and in the pages of The Book of Mormon. For good or evil, listeth implies the desires we allow to take hold in our souls, and amounts to the fixed state our spirits will be in when we depart from this life to the next.

Alma 3:27 For every man receiveth wages of him whom he listeth to obey, and this according to the words of the spirit of prophecy; therefore let it be according to the truth.

Mosiah 2:32  But, O my people, beware lest there shall arise contentions among you, and ye list to obey the evil spirit, which was spoken of by my father Mosiah.
33 For behold, there is a wo pronounced upon him who listeth to obey that spirit; for if he listeth to obey him, and remaineth and dieth in his sins, the same drinketh damnation to his own soul; for he receiveth for his wages an everlasting punishment, having transgressed the law of God contrary to his own knowledge.

LESSON LEARNED: The term listeth as used in The Book of Mormon and The New Testament amounts to the desires of our souls, and pertains to the nature of our spirits that we will take to the next life.

FEEDBACK: WHAT IS YOUR IMPRESSION OF THIS CONCEPT?

  1. I agree. For some reason I've had this phrase on my mind. It seems to be explaining that this earth life reveals what we are naturally drawn to "what we list toward". When a ship lists to one side it means it leans that way. If we lean toward the "evil spirit" we will receive an everlasting punishment as taught by Benjamin.
